The San Francisco 49ers have had a rough go at it throughout the 2025 NFL season. Despite holding a 5-3 record, the plethora of injuries on the roster has been a cause for concern all year long. Slowly but surely, those injuries are starting to catch up to the team, as evidenced by their record. Losing two of their last three games, the loss of Fred Warner and Nick Bosa has put a greater emphasis on the offense to carry the burden.
However, the lack of wide receiver depth, especially with key starters like Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, and Brandon Aiyuk all missing time, has made it a tough climb. With rumors igniting about Jennings potentially being moved for a more reliable option, head coach Kyle Shanahan cleared the air on his designated WR1.
Will the 49ers Move Jauan Jennings?
A seventh-round pick in 2020, Jennings was a minor contributor to the offense through his first four seasons. However, an injury-riddled 2024 campaign saw him take on a major role for the team, tallying 975 yards and six touchdowns.
As a result, a long contract negotiation resulted in his contract being restructured to nearly $10.5 million for the year, as he was named the WR1 for the unit. Unfortunately, injuries have severely hampered his productivity throughout the year.
Through six games, he has just 212 yards and one touchdown, as he’s ranked 72nd on PFSN’s WR Impact, far removed from a 28th-placed finish last season. But even as his struggles continue, the team remains confident in him.
Speaking to reporters after practice, Shanahan clearly had belief in his wide receiver. “Jauan’s been really hurt all year. I think he’s getting better. I think last week was a step in the right direction. Hopefully, he’ll be better this week.”
In a game against the Houston Texans that San Francisco lost 26-15, he caught four passes for 45 yards, his highest yardage total since a 89-yard explosion in Week 2. When the idea of a trade was brought up, Shanahan vehemently shut down the idea.

Making his stance clear, he said, “I’d be very surprised if Jauan wasn’t on our team throughout this year.”
It’s clear that he’s willing to place his faith in the youngster, even as the trade deadline nears.
However, the production from the offense needs a significant lift, thanks to the blows to the defensive unit. With Brock Purdy unlikely to return in Week 9, that is going to complicate matters further for the 49ers.
If Jennings can build off his performance last week, then a healthy trio of himself, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey should be enough to put together an excellent offensive performance and allow San Francisco to return to its winning ways.
