Caleb Williams has a chance to rewrite the Chicago Bears’ record book on Sunday. The second-year quarterback enters Week 18 needing just 109 passing yards against the Detroit Lions to break Erik Kramer’s single-season franchise record of 3,838 yards set in 1995. With 270 yards, he would become the first 4,000-yard passer in team history.
Chicago Looks to Maintain Momentum as Caleb Williams Nears History
Williams acknowledged the significance of the moment this week. Still, he made it clear that personal milestones will not take priority over what the Bears are trying to accomplish as a team.
“For me, it would be cool just in the sense there’s never been one here,” Williams said. “I was brought here for those types of things and those types of moments, the things that haven’t been done here, to try and be able to accomplish.”
He said individual goals matter less than the bigger picture. “But the self-goals and all of that always get swept under when you go for team goals and that’s winning ballgames,” Williams said. “That’s first and foremost on my mind. That’s first and foremost for this team because the most important thing is winning ballgames and heading into the playoffs with some momentum and some good energy.”
Chicago has won seven of its last nine contests and has already clinched a postseason berth. A victory over Detroit would give the Bears additional momentum heading into the NFC playoffs, something both Williams and the coaching staff have emphasized throughout the week. Head coach Ben Johnson said the potential record is meaningful, but it will not change how the Bears plan to approach Sunday.
“If it were to happen that’d be great, but I think he would agree with me when I say our No. 1 objective is to win this ball game,” Johnson said. “Whatever that takes, that’s our goal. We’ll see where it’s at at the end of the year. But that’s tertiary.”
Chicago’s offensive profile reflects the progress made in Johnson’s first season in charge. The Bears hold a PFSN Offense Impact score of 79.7, which ranks tenth in the league. Williams carries a PFSN QB Impact score of 76.2, which ranks eighteenth.
Williams has been central to Chicago’s late-season surge, showing the poise and playmaking ability that made him the first overall pick. Whether he reaches the record or not, the Bears believe they are entering the postseason with a quarterback capable of elevating them in January.
Sunday offers Williams another chance to deliver the type of moment he was drafted to create, even if he insists the only number that matters is the one on the scoreboard.
