It’s funny how casually the term “our guy” gets thrown around in the NFL. But when Aaron Glenn used it for Geno Smith, it didn’t quite land the same. For a quarterback with uneven recent form, it felt like expectations were being cranked up for mediocrity yet again in the Big Apple, and that was enough to set Cam Newton off.
Cam Newton Slams Aaron Glenn’s Bold Geno Smith Claims
Aaron Glenn didn’t hesitate when asked about his quarterback. The reporter asked: “What does it mean to have Geno back in the building?”
“It means to have a bona fide starter come in and lead this offense to where it needs to go,” Glenn said. “So just to be clear, Geno Smith is the starting quarterback?” AG reassured the same: “No doubt about it. He’s our guy.”
That level of certainty is exactly what caught Cam Newton’s attention, and he didn’t hold back. “Geno, be careful who you listen to because the person that you’re listening to may not be secure in their own situation. Coach Aaron Glenn, am I a fan? Absolutely. But brother, you’re on the bubble.”
Newton added, “You are the same coach that flew Aaron Rodgers away to New York just to tell him, no, we’re going a different direction. And you are also the coach who said out of all the quarterbacks to believe in, you winning got your guy in Justin Fields. So bad decisions by coaching early can get a coach fired.”
Newton kept going, tying Glenn’s past decisions directly to his current stance. “This shit sells or dots because of you. You put all your eggs in Justin Fields’ basket. By the midseason, it was no way, no way. And you think they might sweep Aaron Glenn and Geno at the same time? It’s inevitable. Understand the dynamic that Aaron Glenn is up against.”
His warning to Smith was just as direct. “Geno Smith is the fourth-best quarterback in the AFC East to date. So you don’t think Geno is better than Malik Willis? No. The stock ain’t higher from what we’ve seen. I think we’ve seen the best footballer, Geno Smith. Thank you… Geno, be very reluctant how you receive this message because the draft is still around the corner, brother.”
Newton also questioned the uncertainty surrounding Smith’s performance level. “Aaron Glenn… You’re now handing your hat on Geno Smith. You don’t even know what Geno you gonna get in New York. The New York Geno? The Seattle Geno? Or the Vegas Geno? Who knows?”
That’s the core of the concern. After years as a backup with the Seattle Seahawks and a 2022 Comeback Player of the Year run, Geno Smith hasn’t consistently held that level. His 2025 stint with the Las Vegas Raiders saw him lead the league in interceptions (17), reinforcing the volatility Cam Newton is pointing to. He also finished 34th in PFSN’s NFL QB Impact metric with a D+ grade.

At the same time, Glenn is operating under pressure with the New York Jets coming off a 3-14 season and no playoff appearance since 2010. Declaring Smith as “the guy” this early raises the stakes, especially with the No. 2 pick in the 2026 draft still in play — a spot that could easily be used on a quarterback.
That’s why Newton’s criticism hits harder than just a hot take. It’s about timing, leverage, and risk. Glenn has publicly tied his credibility to Smith. If it works, it stabilizes the franchise. If it doesn’t, Newton is already laying out how quickly both the coach and quarterback could be on the line.
