There was hope that Aaron Rodgers would help the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense improve in 2025. While there were times when that unit looked alright, overall, it was another disappointing year. The Steelers have struggled to field a consistently good offense for years. It’s held them back, and that’s part of why they hired Mike McCarthy to be their head coach.
That has sparked rumors that Rodgers could return, too. Some fans might not like the sound of that, but former Steelers offensive lineman Willie Colon thinks the Steelers’ offense could be good with Rodgers, if the team makes some tweaks.
“The production always wasn’t there, and I think that was in large part because of the scheme,” Colon said Monday on FS1’s First Things First. “Arthur Smith lives in 12 personnel with two tight ends. We didn’t get the best out of that. DK Metcalf, we saw a shell of him, especially late in the season.
“They’re gonna have to figure out the wide receiver two position. Who’s gonna be the guy outside DK that can have another impact? I think if they revamp this roster with Aaron Rodgers, you’re gonna be surprised that this offense can hum.”
Smith’s offense was fine, but it was nothing special. It also didn’t seem to click with Rodgers completely. That would be less of an issue with McCarthy. Rodgers played in his offense from 2006 to 2018, and he won two MVP awards during that time.
Colon is also correct that the Steelers need to upgrade at wide receiver. Metcalf had an underwhelming season, and part of that is because defenses gave him a lot of attention. The Steelers didn’t have another threat to take pressure off him.
They should have opportunities to find a wideout to pair alongside Metcalf, though. Free agency should present them with some options, and if they strike out there, the draft’s receiver depth looks good.
The Steelers’ offense already has some nice pieces. Their young offensive line started to come together nicely last year. Darnell Washington showed improvement as a receiving threat, too. If Metcalf and Pat Freiermuth can post better seasons, then the Steelers’ offense might finally show signs of life.
However, getting the quarterback position right is the biggest piece of that puzzle. Rodgers is 42 years old, and he isn’t the same player that he used to be. If the Steelers bring him back, then they’ll need to support him better. Otherwise, they could be looking at another frustrating year on offense.
