Luka Dončić has had an amazing year this season. Finally adjusting to his new team after getting traded to the Los Angeles Lakers last season, Dončić has proven to be a worthy NBA MVP candidate.
Defying doubts to lead the Lakers to the top three in the Western Conference, Luka Dončić has boosted his team’s title odds with season stats that match an impressive record once held by Michael Jordan.
How Luka Dončić Eclipsed Michael Jordan in the Record Books
To many basketball fans, Jordan is the greatest NBA player of all time. His tenacity on the court and never-say-die attitude, which led to six NBA titles, are among the major reasons many consider Jordan the GOAT.
While most known for his knack for scoring, Jordan was capable of delivering across the board. According to StatMuse, Jordan was the first player to average 32 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. He did so back in the 1988-89 season.
No other player managed to replicate the same numbers, not even Kobe Bryant, who was known for mimicking Jordan’s game and mentality on the court. However, 34 years later, Dončić joined the record books and became the second player in history to achieve similar figures.
Dončić first achieved 32/7/7 back in the 2022-23 season. While it was already impressive enough to see another player match Jordan’s record, the Slovenian star added the icing on the cake by achieving the feat two additional times.
Dončić notched the record again in the 2023-24 season and is on track to finish this season with similar numbers. Looking at how Dončić has performed this season, he’s averaging 33.7 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.6 steals.

Given how Dončić has notched averages of 32/7/7 in three seasons, some can argue that he’s a better player than Jordan is. However, that’s a conversation many aren’t ready to have.
Dončić’s efforts didn’t go to waste this season, given how the Los Angeles Lakers are on the verge of securing the No. 3 seed in the upcoming playoffs. Looking at the Lakers’ standing in the Western Conference, they’re currently in third place with a 48-26 record.
With only eight games remaining in their regular season, Dončić and company will need to continue to perform the way they have in the past several games if they wish to secure a good position in the postseason.
