The Kansas City Chiefs lost in their season opener, but their true opener will take place today.
They marked their Week 2 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles down on their calendars from the very moment the league released the schedule.
Nick Sirianni’s team dominated from start to finish in their last meeting, and Andy Reid will look to get back at them in their Super Bowl rematch.
On paper, things don’t look that encouraging for the Chiefs, especially given how shorthanded their wide receiver corps is right now.
Nevertheless, as Adam Schefter of ESPN pointed out on X, history is on their side:
“Chiefs never have lost three straight games with Patrick Mahomes as their starting QB. They lost the Super Bowl. They lost Week 1 vs. the Chargers. And now they face the Eagles in a rematch of February’s Super Bowl,” Schefter posted on X.

Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to win this game, and the paper is meaningless once both teams take the field.
Even so, that speaks volumes about this team’s ability to regroup and bounce back when things get difficult.
Still, this was just a brutal way to start the season.
Getting the first game overseas and against a divisional rival, followed by a matchup with the defending Super Bowl champion, is just tough.
The Chiefs know that starting the season 0-2 will make it quite difficult for them to win the division, and even to make the playoffs.
More than that, it will only continue to boost the narrative about them not being the team to beat or even a Super Bowl contender anymore.
This is the type of game that separates good teams and players from great ones, and it will be interesting to see what Patrick Mahomes has in store for the Eagles today.
