The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t had the season they hoped for. Andy Reid’s team is sitting on a 5-5 record and could even miss the playoffs.
That’s not the way they intended things to go down this season, especially Travis Kelce. He contemplated retirement at the end of last season, but chose to run it back in an attempt to get back to the mountaintop and go out as a champion.
Kelce has bounced back this season after a subpar campaign last year. Even so, that hasn’t been enough for the team to get back to its winning ways.
Now, one year older, he’s going to weigh in on his options again. However, the future Hall of Famer won’t drag his decision. If anything, he wants to make sure his team will be in a good position to replace him if he’s not going to be around for much longer:
“Seeing my brother go through it and seeing — I don’t know, how the league works. I want to give the Chiefs a good opportunity, whether I come back or not, and vice versa,” Kelce said. “It’s one of those things where I’d like to make that decision before they have draft picks and free agency opens and they can go out there and fill the roster appropriately. All of that will be after the season. I won’t think about it until then.”
So far, Kelce has hauled in 50 receptions on 66 targets for 631 yards and four touchdowns. He does have five drops, some of which have been crucial, and he has been on the wrong end of some unfortunate plays, such as a couple of tipped-off interceptions and injuring XR Xavier Worthy.
Still, Kelce will go down as one of the greatest tight ends to ever lace them up. Even if this is the end of the line for him, there’s no way to take anything away from one of the most dominant players of his generation and a future first-ballot Hall of Famer.
