The North Carolina Tar Heels are set to honor a legend at Chapel Hill tonight when the Clemson Tigers come to campus.
Former guard R.J. Davis will celebrate his jersey being raised to the rafters at halftime of the Tar Heels’ ACC matchup Tuesday night, following the event’s rescheduling. But where has Davis’ basketball career taken him since his college days ended?
Where is R.J. Davis Playing Following Legendary Career at UNC?
After a storied career at North Carolina, where he finished as the Tar Heels’ second all-time leading scorer with 2,725 points, Davis signed with the Los Angeles Lakers organization after going undrafted. In 2026, he plays for the G League’s South Bay Lakers and currently averages 18.8 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game.
Davis and his family will travel from Los Angeles to Chapel Hill for the celebration Tuesday night, after severe weather forced the event to be moved from Monday’s game against Louisville to the Tar Heels’ final home game of the season.
Davis spent all five years of his collegiate career, from 2020 to 2025, with the Tar Heels. Over time, he developed into one of the best offensive guards not only in the ACC but in all of college basketball.
The 2024 season was arguably the best of his career. After averaging 21.2 points per game to lead the conference, Davis was named ACC Player of the Year and earned All-America honors. That year, he set the Smith Center single-game scoring record with 42 points against Miami on Feb. 26, 2024.
In his final college season, Davis started all 37 games and averaged 17.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 34.2 minutes per game, earning All-ACC honors for the second straight year.
He went undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft but subsequently signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Now, Davis continues to play solid basketball with the Lakers’ G League affiliate, hoping to break through to the NBA.
While his professional journey is still unfolding, his legacy in Chapel Hill is already secure. From record-setting scoring nights at the Dean Smith Center to ACC Player of the Year honors, Davis left an imprint few guards in program history can match.
As his No. 4 ascends to the rafters, joining 50 other Tar Heel greats immortalized above the court, it stands as a tribute to everything he accomplished at North Carolina. The university is wasting no time raising his number to immortality, cementing his legacy with the Tar Heels, as his professional career has only just begun.
