The Terrible Podcast – Benton Contract Breakdown, McCarthy Reveals QB Plan, Kozora’s QB Camp Grades & More

Season 17, Episode 10 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday morning show Alex Kozora and I start by talking about the contract extension the Pittsburgh Steelers completed with DT Keeanu Benton on the heels of the finer details of it now being known. We discuss the cash flow of Benton’s deal through the 2026 and 2027 seasons and how little fully guaranteed money is included in it.

While Benton now has a new-money average that equals that of DT Cameron Heyward’s contract, we explain how Heyward will earn much more in cash over the course of the next two seasons. We also speculate about why Benton accepted such a team-friendly contract as opposed to betting on himself in 2026.

Alex and I go over where the Steelers now sit in real-time salary cap-wise with the Benton extension numbers now known. That conversation continues into the work the Steelers still likely need to do before the 2026 regular season gets underway.

After talking about the Benton contract in-depth, Alex and I go over the Steelers’ plan at quarterback for their second preseason game against the New York Jets on Friday night. HC Mike McCarthy announced on Wednesday morning that Will Howard and Drew Allar will be the only quarterbacks to play against the Jets. We go over that decision and what it may or may not mean when it comes to QB Mason Rudolph’s future.

On the heels of Alex releasing his quarterback grades for training camp, we make sure to highlight those midway through this show.

While we plan to do a more detailed preview of the Friday night preseason game against the Jets during our next podcast episode, Alex and I reveal some of the early things we look forward to seeing in that exhibition contest. We go over where OT Broderick Jones might play Friday night and if OL Brock Hoffman might see the second-team snaps at center.
