Fantasy football injury risk is usually handled badly. A player gets hurt in August and drafters either ignore it or knock him down the board without thinking enough about price. The better question is simple, what does the injury actually change?
This is not a prediction of which players will get hurt. These are five fantasy-relevant players already on the PFM NFL Injury Tracker whose current situations can change what I am willing to pay on draft day. Some injuries barely move a player for me. Others make an already aggressive draft price much harder to pay.
Injury Risk Should Change the Price, Not Erase the Player
The word injury does not automatically mean panic. I still have Ja’Marr Chase as my WR1 after a knee hyperextension. Brian Thomas Jr. is almost exactly where FantasyPros ADP has him even after a shoulder scare. Ashton Jeanty is different because the market is still drafting him much earlier than I am willing to take him.
The injury matters, but so do the draft slot, expected role and latest details of the update. My 2026 fantasy football rankings and current FantasyPros Half-PPR ADP give me two useful reference points instead of reacting to the headline alone.
| Player | My Rank | FantasyPros ADP | My Draft Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ja’Marr Chase | No. 2 | WR1 | No. 3 | WR1 | Knee hyperextensionDo not overreact |
| Ashton Jeanty | No. 26 | RB12 | No. 11 | RB6 | Sprained ankleI’m much lower |
| Mike Evans | No. 74 | WR32 | No. 64 | WR28 | GroinWait longer than market |
| Brian Thomas Jr. | No. 75 | WR33 | No. 77 | WR33 | ShoulderStay close to market |
| Sam LaPorta | No. 81 | TE7 | No. 70 | TE6 | HipDo not chase TE6 price |
The Knee Changes What We Watch, Not His WR1 Case
My RankNo. 2 | WR1
FantasyPros ADPNo. 3 | WR1
Injury WatchKnee | Monitor
Chase gave Cincinnati a real scare when he hyperextended his left knee in practice. He later said he was good and could have kept practicing if needed, then sat out the next day’s work. He was not seen wearing a brace and Cincinnati has not announced a return timetable.
That is enough for me to monitor. It is not enough to turn the best receiver on my board into a major fade. I have Chase No. 2 overall and WR1 while FantasyPros Half-PPR ADP has him No. 3 overall and WR1. There is basically no market disagreement here.
If Chase gets back into normal work before Week 1, the knee becomes much less important to the draft decision. If the absence stretches into regular-season preparation, then the risk changes fast.
I am keeping Chase near the top of my board. The current update gives me something to watch, not a reason to panic and move him down.

Jeanty’s Ankle Makes His Current Draft Price Hard for Me to Pay
My RankNo. 26 | RB12
FantasyPros ADPNo. 11 | RB6
Injury WatchAnkle | Injured
Jeanty’s injury looked much worse when it happened than the first diagnosis suggests. The Raiders believe he suffered a sprained ankle and the injury is not considered long term. Las Vegas still has not given a return timetable, so there is still some uncertainty on his week 1 status.
The price is what makes this one uncomfortable. FantasyPros Half-PPR ADP has Jeanty at No. 11 overall and RB6. I have him at No. 26 and RB12. That is a 15-pick gap before I even get to the question of exactly when he will be back at full speed.
My lower rank is not based on one ankle update alone, but the injury makes an aggressive first-round or early-second-round price even tougher for me to justify.
I am not paying the current RB6 price while the return is unsettled. I already have Jeanty 15 spots lower than FantasyPros ADP, and the ankle gives me another reason to wait.

The Groin Is Minor, but I Am Still Lower Than the Market
My RankNo. 74 | WR32
FantasyPros ADPNo. 64 | WR28
Injury WatchGroin | Monitor
Evans plans to play Week 1 and the latest groin injury is considered minor. If this were the only factor on the board, it would not be much of a reason to move him.
The bigger issue is the price. FantasyPros Half-PPR ADP has Evans at No. 64 overall and WR28. I have him No. 74 and WR32. That gap is enough for me to want about another round of patience in a 12-team league.
The groin injury adds a little more uncertainty to a player I was already taking later than the market. A clean run of practice before Week 1 would help, but it would not automatically erase the gap for me.
Evans can still be a good pick, but I need the price to come down. I would rather wait than pay WR28 while the groin is still part of the conversation.

This Is the Kind of Injury Update That Should Not Create a Big Drop
My RankNo. 75 | WR33
FantasyPros ADPNo. 77 | WR33
Injury WatchShoulder | Monitor
Thomas landed hard on his shoulder during a Jaguars practice and stopped participating. The important part came afterward. Liam Coen said Thomas is all right and Jacksonville will likely hold him out until Week 1.
That is a much different situation than a player with a long recovery window or one still waiting on a diagnosis. I have Thomas at No. 75 overall and WR33. FantasyPros Half-PPR ADP has him No. 77 and WR33. The two boards are almost identical.
There is no reason to knock him down two rounds because of one scary practice moment when the team gave an encouraging update. If Thomas is not back when Jacksonville begins normal Week 1 preparation, the conversation will start to change.
I am staying close to the current market. This is a monitor, not a panic button for me unless Week 1 preparation starts without Thomas.

LaPorta’s Hip Is a Reason I Am Not Chasing the TE6 Price
My RankNo. 81 | TE7
FantasyPros ADPNo. 70 | TE6
Injury WatchHip | Injured
LaPorta’s hip injury is the most unsettled Week 1 situation on this list. Dan Campbell would not guarantee that LaPorta will be available for Detroit’s September 13 opener, although the Lions have said they feel good about him long term.
FantasyPros Half-PPR ADP still has LaPorta at No. 70 overall and TE6. I have him at No. 81 and TE7. That is not a massive disagreement, but it is enough to matter to me in a part of the draft where several healthy receivers and running backs are still available.
At that price, LaPorta is not an injury discount. The market is still treating him like a top-six tight end while his Week 1 status remains uncertain.
I would rather wait a little longer. LaPorta is still my TE7, but I do not see a reason to chase the TE6 market price before the hip situation gets clearer.

What Should Fantasy Managers Actually Do With Injury Risk?
Start with availability, then look at direction. A player who misses one practice after a scare is not the same as a player whose return date is still unknown. The next verified update matters more than the word attached to the injury today.
Then I bring the price back into it. Chase can carry a monitoring tag and still belong near the top because my rank and FantasyPros ADP are basically in agreement. Jeanty is different because the market is still taking him 15 spots before I am. Thomas sits almost exactly where both sides have him.
