The Kansas City Chiefs fell just short of winning a third consecutive Super Bowl last season and set out for revenge this year, but things haven’t gone according to plan. All the close games they won last year have reverted this year, and the team has now dropped two in a row to drop back to .500 ahead of a crucial matchup with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
It has been a long time since football fans have seen the Chiefs in such an uncertain situation, as the playoffs could be nearly out of reach with a loss on Sunday. While many have given up hope, Stephen A. Smith doesn’t believe the Chiefs should be counted out just yet.
During Wednesday’s episode of First Take, Smith spoke about how much he still believes in this team. He said that the Chiefs are more likely to make the Super Bowl again than they are to miss the playoffs.
“Their backs are against the wall. I think they respond the way champions do, and they remind everybody who the hell they are,” Smith said.

All of Kansas City’s losses have been by seven points or less, which feels like karma after the team somehow won seemingly every game last year under the same circumstances, often with a ridiculous and unbelievable turn of events that always broke in their favor in the game’s final minutes. The Chiefs went 12-0 in one-score games last year before getting walloped 40-22 in the Super Bowl.
Indianapolis will be looking to keep pace with the New England Patriots atop the AFC and continue on its quest to obtain a first-round bye. Prior to this season, most would have expected the Chiefs to be fighting for the bye and the Colts to be hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive at this point, but the roles have surprisingly reversed.
It should be a fun one with two teams in very different situations. It’s hard to envision the Chiefs missing the playoffs, but with a loss to the Colts, that becomes a much more realistic outcome.
