Pewter Report’s Scott Reynolds previews the upcoming Bucs game with six quick-hitting topics. What’s at stake for the Bucs and their opponent, what will lead to a Tampa Bay victory or loss, and a couple of key matchups to watch each week.
The vultures are circling One Buc Place as the Bucs are 0-4 and could very well be 0-5 by Friday if they don’t pull off an upset in Dallas on Thursday Night Football. Head coach Todd Bowles is 2-11 in his last 13 games and his seat is hotter than ever. While the Bucs defense has played better lately, the unit will receive its toughest test of the year against a red hot Cowboys offense coming off scoring 30 points or more in three straight games. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s offense is struggling and will see rookie Jalon Daniels start at quarterback for the second time in five games.
What’s At Stake For The Bucs?
What’s at stake for the Bucs? Everything. Todd Bowles’ job is on the line at 0-4. At 0-5 it would likely be time for general manager Jason Licht to do something he’s never done before, which is to have a fire sale and trade away assets for future draft picks and to clear cash/cap room for 2027. That would probably upset Bowles, who needs to win as many games as he can to stay onboard the Bucs’ ship. Bowles is 2-11 in his last 13 games as head coach.
An unlikely Tampa Bay win might stave off those plans, but only if the team could use an upset win to springboard future success in the coming weeks. Otherwise, it’s just prolonging the inevitable. The Bucs already trail every team in the NFC South with Carolina and Atlanta both sporting 2-2 records. The sense of urgency in Tampa Bay has never been higher. Falling to 0-5 would require the Bucs going 9-3 down the stretch to avoid back-to-back losing seasons after last year’s disappointing 8-9 record.

What’s At Stake For The Cowboys?
Including a long distance trip to Brazil to play the Ravens and a short road game at Houston last week, the Cowboys return home to play their third game in 11 days. For Dallas, this is a chance to push their record above .500 and build some much-needed momentum in the NFC playoff race. At 2-2, the Cowboys have shown flashes of being a legitimate contender, but consistency remains the biggest question. A victory over Tampa Bay would give the Cowboys their third win in four games and provide an opportunity to string together victories heading into the heart of the schedule.
Playing at home adds to the importance of this matchup. The Cowboys need to protect their own turf against a 0-4 Bucs team, particularly with higher expectations surrounding Dallas. A loss would raise questions about Dallas’ ability to take care of business against teams it is expected to beat. Beyond the standings, this game represents an opportunity for the Cowboys to establish an identity. Dallas needs to demonstrate that it can play complementary football, which means playing much better defense, avoiding costly mistakes and finishing games. A Week 5 win would strengthen their position; a loss would create considerably more uncertainty.

The Bucs Win If…
The Buccaneers need to play complementary football to pull off a road upset against the Cowboys in Week 5. Offensively, Tampa Bay must establish the run early to take advantage of a suspect Dallas defense and stay committed to it, taking pressure off rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels, who must do a better job of identifying pressure pre-snap and adjusting accordingly. Explosive plays will be important, but protecting the football is paramount, as Daniels threw two interceptions last week in his first start. Tampa Bay cannot afford empty possessions or turnovers that give Dallas short fields.
Defensively, the Bucs have to find a way to disrupt Dallas’ rhythm without consistently leaving their secondary vulnerable. The Cowboys have enough playmakers to punish missed assignments with the 1-2 punch of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens outside, so Tampa Bay must tackle well and limit yards after the catch. Tampa Bay must generate pressure up front, but it needs to be generated with discipline rather than reckless blitzing. The Bucs only have six sacks in four games and have yet to win the turnover battle in any game this year and sit at minus-5 in turnover differential.

The Cowboys Win If…
Dallas has struggled with some fast starts in the first month of the season, but if the offense can get clicking early and jump out to a double-digit lead on Tampa Bay this one could be over quickly. Points have been at a premium for the Bucs and will be even harder to come by with rookie QB Jalon Daniels under center. Forcing Tampa Bay’s offense to play from behind is paramount, and Dallas needs to establish the run enough to keep the Bucs’ defensive front honest. Dak Prescott should use quick throws, play-action and intermediate routes to get the ball to his playmakers, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, and stay ahead of Tampa Bay’s pass rush.
Defensively, the Cowboys must make life difficult for Daniels and force the Bucs to sustain long drives. Dallas should emphasize pressure up front by loading the box to stop Bucky Irving and the ground game while pressuring Daniels on obvious throwing downs. The Bucs struggle to generate explosive plays, so the key for the Cowboys’ struggling defense will be to prevent Tampa Bay from getting any big plays early that could allow them to build confidence. The Cowboys also need to win the turnover battle, as the Bucs are 0-4 because they have yet to take the ball away more than they give it away.

Bucs’ Key Matchup On Offense
Bucs QB Jalon Daniels vs. Cowboys’ Loaded Box
The matchup between Bucs rookie QB Jalon Daniels and a struggling Cowboys defense could be one of the most intriguing storylines of Thursday night’s Week 5 showdown. Daniels will make his second NFL start – and his first on the road – after showing both promise and rookie growing pains in Tampa Bay’s 17-14 loss to Green Bay. He threw for 148 yards and a touchdown, added 55 rushing yards and led two impressive touchdown drives, but also threw two interceptions. He must identify pressure quicker and make the proper adjustments, as well as lean on the running game so the Bucs don’t have to rely on him to win the game. Dallas must blitz the rookie QB early and often to prevent him from being comfortable.
The Cowboys defense should provide Daniels with an opportunity to settle in, but Dallas has plenty to prove, too. Through four games, the Cowboys have allowed the third-most yards and fourth-most points in the NFL while generating just four sacks and no interceptions. Dallas has been particularly vulnerable against the run, allowing 601 rushing yards through four games — an average of 150.3 per game.
Daniels’ mobility adds another dimension, while Bucky Irving and the run game can attack a Cowboys defense that has struggled to get off the field. If Tampa Bay can establish the run, it can ease the burden on Daniels and create opportunities for play-action passes downfield. Zac Robinson’s offense has been void of big, explosive plays throughout the start of the 2026 season.

Bucs’ Key Matchup On Defense
Bucs Secondary vs. Cowboys WRs CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens
The matchup between CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens and Tampa Bay’s secondary, primarily cornerbacks Zyon McCollum, Jacob Parrish and Keionte Scott, should be one of the defining battles of Thursday night’s game. Lamb enters Week 5 as Dak Prescott’s clear No. 1 target, leading the NFL with 37 catches and 498 receiving yards. He is coming off a spectacular 17-catch, 189-yard performance against Houston, making containing him the Bucs’ biggest challenge. Yet Tampa Bay, who will be playing without star safety Antoine Winfield Jr., can’t forget about Pickens, either.
McCollum and Parrish have each allowed an opposing passer rating below 80 when targeted this season, while Scott has emerged as the Bucs’ starting nickel and has played well so far. Scott could see plenty of Lamb in the slot depending on how Dallas moves its star receiver around the formation. Pickens presents a different problem. His 6-foot-3 size, speed and ability to win contested catches make him a dangerous matchup outside, particularly against the 5-foot-10 Parrish and McCollum, who is prone to peaking into the backfield and having lapses in coverage.
The Cowboys can create additional stress by moving Lamb and Pickens around, forcing Tampa Bay to communicate and adjust its coverage rather than allowing the corners to settle into one matchup. For Dallas, it is simple: keep feeding its two elite receivers and make Parrish, McCollum, Scott and reserve safety Ifeatu Melifonwu prove they can hold up for four quarters. For Tampa Bay, the formula is disciplined coverage, strong communication and preventing explosive plays.
