A former Vikings defender has seen his 2026 season stolen away due to tearing his Achilles, a brutal injury that could threaten his readiness for 2027.
ESPN Adam Schefter sent the word about defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. Schefter’s matter-of-fact report about the bad news: “Tests today confirmed that Green Bay Packers DT Javon Hargrave suffered a season-ending torn Achilles.”
Former Vikings Defender Done for ’26
Oddly enough, one of the lingering memories of Javon Hargrave in Minnesota comes back to how he left the team. The veteran hinted at some discontent with his deployment in an infamous inception tweet.
Quibbles with the DC aside, Hargrave got sent packing, allowing him to land a deal with the Packers. Green Bay scooped him up for a contract that promises to kick over $23 million across a pair of seasons (OTC). Unfortunately, the focus now shifts toward the second season of that agreement. Green Bay can opt to move on for some beefy cap savings in 2027, liberating $10 million in cap space with a cut.
His stats for 2026 show four games and 123 snaps without getting any starts. He snagged 6 tackles and a pair of quarterback hits. PFF handed out an impressive 74.1 grade, suggesting he’s still got some burst firing out of his stance.

In Minnesota, Hargrave did have some good moments. When he’s on, Hargrave explodes when the ball is snapped, putting the blocker on his heels ultra quick. Go re-watch that Week 1 Bears game from the 2025 season for an example of how disruptive he can be.

Javon Hargrave got worked into sixteen games with the Vikings while starting fifteen. He had 52 tackles alongside 3.5 sacks, 6 quarterback hits, and 4 tackles for loss. So, too, did he offer up a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Solid but not sizzling.

Minnesota moved on in March of 2026, instead opting for cap savings alongside a full youth movement at the position. DT1 Jalen Redmond is now leading things (and doing splendidly). He’s being supported by Levi Drake Rodriguez, Ty Ingram-Dawkins, Caleb Banks, Domonique Orange, and Elijah Williams. These young fellas have combined to play some really promising ball.

The Vikings and Packers played their debut game against each other back in Week 1. Things were going terribly inside of U.S. Bank Stadium prior to the defense becoming dominant in the second half. The final score showed 39-22 in favor of the Vikings, in no small part due to Minnesota so thoroughly winning at the line of scrimmage.
The second Vikings v. Packers game arrives in Week 10 and will be played at Lambeau Field.
Javon Hargrave, 33, will now focus on a long recovery as he looks to continue putting in work in the trenches for Green Bay.
