Maybe J.J. McCarthy believed HC Kevin O’Connell and GM Nolan Teasley when the top leaders proclaimed a desire to continue working with him. Instead, Minnesota moved on for a 5th, a humdrum offering given that he got scooped up at No. 10 in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Now a Giant, McCarthy chatted with the media about the swap that saw him turn in his purple jersey for a blue one.
Jordan Raanan of ESPN covered the story, passing along some of what the kid had to say. Consider some praise for John Harbaugh: “Just everything [John Harbaugh] did in Baltimore, it was super inspiring just to see him take a team and have that success for such a long period of time. And being in this building, you feel it. You feel it. He’s made of the right stuff. He says the right things. He guides his players in the right direction. And yeah, I’m really excited to play for him.”
Shock, Opportunity, and Work: J.J. McCarthy Adjusting to Life in NY
J.J. McCarthy is looking to maintain a positive outlook. He’s doing so by turning some initial shock into a more positive outlook: “When I got the call here, it was a shock. I didn’t anticipate it, but at the end of the day, it’s an opportunity.”
Raanan offers some of the background between the passer and coach: “McCarthy acknowledged that he was quite familiar with Harbaugh. He played for John’s brother, Jim, at the University of Michigan, where they won the national championship. John Harbaugh acknowledged watching McCarthy closely during that time and noted that his brother always had good things to say about him as a quarterback and as a person.”

Apparently, McCarthy “didn’t want to get into what went wrong in Minnesota.” Not long afterwards, the author explained that McCarthy “has turned the page on that chapter of his playing career.”
All things considered, the Giants did a nice job with this one. At minimum, J.J. McCarthy will be a depth passer for the next couple of seasons. He could then be allowed to test free agency, a spot where he could plausibly demand enough money to put a compensatory pick on the board for the Giants.
Not a bad swing, at least from my perspective.
Meanwhile, Minnesota is moving ahead with a peculiar situation. A 4-0 Vikings team is being led by a veteran passer in Kyler Murray, somebody who has hit a single for touchdowns alongside a double for interceptions. He has yet to fully see things click, though there were several promising moments toward the end of the Week 4 win.
Next up on the quarterback depth chart are Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer. The veteran journeyman is a competent short-term option but would probably struggle if tasked with starting across a full year. Brosmer is a long-term development option who shouldn’t get onto the field right now.

Since letting Sam Darnold slip away, the Vikings have been through much. Most notably, the GM who made the final call (Kwesi Adofo-Mensah) and QB picked as a replacement (J.J. McCarthy) have been shown the door. Seeing Murray sizzle will mean that all is forgiven, at least to a certain extent.
But then there’s a possibility that’s still out there: moving off of McCarthy is a version of letting Darnold slip away. There are several differences in their stories but the overlap rests in the Vikings moving on from a passer due to underperforming expectations. Might added patience have been required for each?
Seeing J.J. McCarthy shine in a new setting won’t be at all surprising. He’s got talent and a work ethic, a potent combo. He should have even more motivation now, too.
J.J. McCarthy is 23.
