Connor Hellebuyck’s future with the Winnipeg Jets remains one of the biggest unresolved stories of the NHL offseason, even as several teams continue searching for an elite starting goaltender. The veteran netminder has been linked to multiple contenders, and the speculation has only intensified after Winnipeg began exploring its options.
What initially appeared to be a blockbuster deal in the making, however, ultimately stalled over one critical detail.
Elliotte Friedman Details What Sank Connor Hellebuyck’s Trade
Hellebuyck came remarkably close to joining the Buffalo Sabres, but according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the proposed blockbuster unraveled because the two teams could not agree on draft-pick compensation.
Speaking on the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman explained that the disagreement centered less on Hellebuyck himself and more on how the teams valued their first-round selections.
Friedman said Buffalo was prepared to part with the No. 4 overall pick as part of the package, but only if Winnipeg included its No. 8 selection in return. The Jets, however, wanted to keep both picks.
“Buffalo was like, ‘No, if we’re giving you the fourth overall pick, we have to get the eighth overall pick back,’” Friedman explained. “I think Winnipeg wanted both of those picks, and that’s why it didn’t happen.”
The failed negotiations were significant because Hellebuyck was reportedly willing to waive his no-movement clause for Buffalo, eliminating one of the biggest hurdles in any potential trade. Instead, the discussion collapsed over the finer details of the draft package, leaving both sides without an agreement despite meaningful progress.
Friedman also expressed skepticism that Winnipeg can repair the relationship. “They have talked about whether they can convince him to come back. I think that’s going to be a really hard thing to do. I’m not counting on that,” he said.
These comments suggest the organization still faces uncertainty even though Hellebuyck remains under contract through the 2030-31 season with an $8.5 million average annual value.
The Jets are not under immediate pressure to complete a deal, but recent moves indicate they are preparing for every possibility.
Winnipeg signed Stuart Skinner in free agency, giving the team an experienced option in goal if Hellebuyck is eventually moved. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has also made it clear that he will only approve a trade if another team meets his steep asking price.
Friedman closed by raising another question about Winnipeg’s long-term approach, wondering whether the organization sometimes asks its young players to wait too long before committing to them.

Whether that philosophy influenced these negotiations remains unclear, but one thing is evident: Hellebuyck’s future will ultimately depend on Cheveldayoff’s approval.
