LeBron James ended his eight-year stay with the Los Angeles Lakers last month, but he remains a central figure in speculations surrounding the team.
On Monday, multiple reports emerged that federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are investigating possible “financial improprieties” committed by Lakers principal stakeholder Mark Walter’s insurance companies and Guggenheim Partners LLC.
The reports sparked strong reactions from the WNBA world and dragged James into rumors.
Lakers Owner Mark Walter Under Federal Investigation, Sparking Massive NBA Reaction
Bloomberg reported on Monday that Guggenheim Partners LLC and two insurance companies controlled by the billionaire, Delaware Life Insurance Co. and Clear Spring Life, are under investigation.
Although the report does not include the Lakers, the Los Angeles Dodgers, or the Los Angeles Sparks, teams where Walter has majority ownership, speculations are already running rampant.
James, the Lakers’ franchise player for eight years, was included in the reactions from NBA observers.
“LeBron knew this, and this is why he left the Lakers. Just wait until this comes out and the world knows what Mark Walter did,” an avid supporter of the four-time MVP tweeted.

“Mark Walter got the Buss brothers out of the picture, and suddenly the feds are asking questions? Interesting,” an NBA blogger added.

“Mark Walter popped up seemingly out of nowhere to outbid a slew of billionaires for the Dodgers in 2012, and now he owns the Los Angeles Lakers, too. MLB and the NBA have strict debt limits, so that’s a lot of cash that had to come from somewhere,” baseball fanatic Joe Kehoskie wrote.

“Lakers always have to one-up the Clippers,” an NBA observer commented.
Like the 41-year-old free agent, the Los Angeles Clippers have also been swept into roughly similar conversations.
The Clippers are also under investigation by the NBA for allegedly circumventing the salary cap to keep Kawhi Leonard. League commissioner Adam Silver said last week that the results of the probe would come out soon.

Silver has also not indicated that the NBA would make inquiries on the Lakers in the same way it did with the Clippers. In fact, there has been no allegation, just speculation that has caused a sensation on social media.
Walter, who once held approximately 26% stake, now controls roughly 85% of the Lakers alongside business partner Todd Boehly, with Walter as the majority owner after the NBA approved the record-breaking $10 billion sale from the Buss family in October 2025.
