Vikings News: Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy Locked in Genuine Battle for Vikings’ Starting Job
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell isn’t tipping his hand on the quarterback competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy, even with training camp approaching later this month.
Appearing on The Dan Patrick Show, O’Connell was asked directly about the state of the battle. He didn’t name a leader. “Kyler has come in and done a great job,” O’Connell said. “J.J., I think, has benefited from it; he’s had a really good spring. Carson Wentz is this veteran quarterback in the room.”
Murray joined the Vikings this offseason on a one-year deal after the Arizona Cardinals released him in March, closing out a run that began when Arizona made him the No. 1 overall pick in 2019. His final season in Arizona was cut short by a foot injury after five starts. McCarthy, meanwhile, is entering his second full season as Minnesota’s presumed long-term answer at the position after the team selected him 10th overall in 2024.
Many around the league view Murray as the favorite to win the job outright, a belief O’Connell has been careful not to confirm publicly before camp opens. NFL Network has reported that the Vikings intend to run a genuine, open competition between the two, and O’Connell has repeated that the door remains open for either quarterback.
For Murray, the move represents a chance at a fresh start behind an offensive line and supporting cast that includes wide receiver Justin Jefferson. His experience and rushing ability give him a level of proven upside that McCarthy, still developing, has not yet matched at the NFL level. O’Connell has a track record of getting strong results out of veteran quarterbacks in new situations, which adds another layer of intrigue to how this battle plays out.
In fantasy circles, Murray is drawing attention as a QB2 with real upside, largely because of the rushing production he could add on top of whatever he provides as a passer. McCarthy has not generated the same level of fantasy buzz this offseason, reflecting how unsettled his path to snaps remains with Murray in the building.
Nothing will be decided until camp battles play out on the field. O’Connell has made clear that the competition, not a predetermined plan, will determine who takes the first snap of the regular season.
