‘Only With No. 1 Picks,’ ‘Jared Goff Made You’ — Ben Johnson’s Apparent Jab at Lions QB Sets Off Detroit Fans

Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears completed a Monday Night Football masterpiece at Soldier Field against the Philadelphia Eagles. The offense was efficient despite third-string quarterback Case Keenum running it.

The Chicago defense was just as good, holding the Eagles to seven points and no passing touchdowns. The win has the Bears sixth in PFN’s Team Impact Rankings.

But what caught fans’ attention was a postgame comment from Johnson about play-calling, one that drew reactions ranging from support to sharp criticism.

Ben Johnson’s No. 1 Pick Comment Raises Eyebrows

A reporter asked Johnson, “So, how do you go into preparation when you’re dealing with a quarterback who maybe stays in the pocket more but gets the ball out quick as opposed to Caleb (Williams), who maybe is a bit more mobile?”

Johnson replied, “Well, I’ve got a little history with that, of calling plays for someone not so mobile. Now, my history is only with No. 1 picks. That was apparently a big deal.”

It’s true that every quarterback Johnson called plays for before Monday was a No. 1 overall pick. As the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator from 2022 to 2024, he worked with Jared Goff, the first overall selection in 2016.

In Chicago, he inherited Caleb Williams, the No. 1 pick in 2024, a fact that drew plenty of attention when he took the job. Keenum is the first non-No. 1 pick he’s called plays for, and Johnson’s game plan helped the veteran finish 24 of 34 for 247 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

It was the first part of Johnson’s answer, about “someone not so mobile,” that set off fans. Some didn’t see it as a shot at all. “Why are Lions fans thinking he took a shot at Goff?” one fan asked, arguing the jab was aimed more at the reporters, and that Goff himself would acknowledge his limitations as a scrambler.

Lions Fans Fire Back at Ben Johnson

Many Lions fans saw it differently and reacted harshly. “Jared Goff made you, you ungrateful P.O.S.,” one wrote. “McVay didn’t even slander Jared like this. We have every right to call Ben out, especially after JG defended him last year,” said another.

“Jared Goff made this fool. He should be grateful,” another added. The Johnson-Goff pairing did produce an NFC Championship Game appearance, though the Lions slipped to 9-8 last season, Johnson’s first year in Chicago.

Some Lions fans came armed with facts. “Goff hung 50 on this clown’s head. I don’t want to hear it,” one wrote. “Goff is 2-0 vs. this guy, btw,” another pointed out.

Whether Goff and the Lions use Johnson’s comment as bulletin-board material remains to be seen. The division rivals first meet in Week 12 on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, and again five weeks later in a game that could carry playoff implications.
