For much of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Mitch Marner looked like a player determined to silence every criticism that followed him out of Toronto. But after the Vegas Golden Knights fell 3-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 6, losing the Stanley Cup Final 4-2, the spotlight quickly turned back to Marner’s performance (or lack thereof) in the biggest moments.
Mitch Marner Draws Heat After VGK’s Stanley Cup Final Loss
Despite finishing as the NHL’s playoff scoring leader with 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists), Marner is once again facing criticism after a quiet finish to the Stanley Cup Final.
The veteran winger was outstanding early in the series. Through the first three games against Carolina, Marner recorded three goals and four assists, including a hat trick in Game 3 that helped Vegas take a 2-1 series lead.
However, his production fell off a cliff over the final three games. Marner was held to just one assist, finished with a minus-5 rating, recorded no primary points, and managed only four shots on goal as Vegas lost all three games and surrendered the series to Carolina.
The drop-off sparked immediate reactions across the hockey world after Carolina clinched the championship.
NHL analyst Drew Livingstone pointed directly to Marner’s production in the final three games, writing: “Just folded in crunch time.”
Sports TV host Julie Stewart-Binks took a broader look at the situation, saying, “Getting all the way to the Stanley Cup Final and you lose to the team that wanted to trade for you the previous year. Once again cold mitts most of the series. It’s a cruel world for Mitch Marner.”
BarDown focused on the individual awards race, posting: “Mitch Marner’s Conn Smythe campaign ran dry in the latter half of the Stanley Cup Final.” Leafs insider JD Bunkis couldn’t resist revisiting the narrative that followed Marner during his time in Toronto: “Marner points in Games 5 and 6: 0. Guess we’ll have to wait to hear about the dark times.”
In the end, Marner’s performance will likely divide opinion all over again. Some will focus on his quiet finish as Vegas lost three straight games to surrender the series, while others will point out that he led all players in playoff scoring and helped carry the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final.

Marner didn’t produce much in the final three games, but he wasn’t the only reason Vegas lost to a strong Carolina team. Once the disappointment fades, his outstanding playoff run may be remembered just as much as the way the season ended.
