Alexander Zverev’s girlfriend, actress and model Sophia Thomalla, was seen wiping away tears in the stands during the German’s first-round match at the 2025 Vienna Open. The couple has been together for five years, having started dating in 2020. Leading up to the ATP 500 hard-court tournament in Austria, Zverev participated in the 2025 Shanghai Masters, where he reached the third round before losing to the eventual runner-up, Arthur Rinderknech.

Zverev is seeded second at the 2025 Vienna Open, and he began his campaign by facing qualifier Jacob Fearnley in the first round. He won the first set 6-4, but the Brit made a strong comeback to claim the second set 6-1.
The former World No. 2 held his nerves and won the final set 7-6(5), winning the match with a scoreline of 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(5). This victory marked Zverev’s fourth win against Fearnley in their four encounters on the ATP Tour.
During the match against Fearnley at the Vienna Open, Zverev’s girlfriend, Thomalla, who was sitting in the stands, appeared to be emotional and was seen wiping away her tears.
This year, in addition to his singles campaign at the 2025 Vienna Open, Zverev also competed in the doubles event. He partnered with Marcelo Melo, and they lost 3-6, 1-6 to the third-seeded duo of Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten in the first round.
Following his victory over Fearnley in the first round of the 2025 Vienna Open, Zverev is set to face qualifier Matteo Arnaldi in the second round of the tournament. In the lead-up to the ATP 500 hard-court tournament, Arnaldi competed at the 2025 Shanghai Masters, where he defeated Rei Sakamoto in the first round before losing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second.
Arnaldi secured his spot in the main draw of the 2025 Vienna Open by winning his matches in the qualifiers. He defeated Jesper de Jong 6-4, 7-6(5) in the first qualifying round and then eliminated Tristan Schoolkate 7-6(5), 6-3 in the second qualifying round. The Italian secured his place in the second round against Zverev by defeating qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic 7-5, 6-4 in the first round of the main draw.
Zverev and Arnaldi have played against each other twice on the ATP Tour, with the German winning both matches. Their most recent encounter was in the third round of the 2025 Canadian Open, where Zverev won with a scoreline of 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2.
The winner of the second round match between Zverev and Arnaldi at the 2025 Vienna Open will advance to face Tallon Griekspoor in the quarterfinals.
