The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly signing LB Jacoby Windmon to the roster, per UFL analyst Michael Del Negro.
Negro previously reported the team’s workout with EDGE Jah Joyner, which Joyner confirmed, but it appears the team is set to sign Windmon instead. Windmon also shared the news to his Instagram page, seemingly confirming the signing. ESPN’s Adam Schefter also noted the news.
Pittsburgh has an open roster spot, meaning the team can sign him without having to make a corresponding move.
This will mark Windmon’s third stint with the team. Initially signed as an UDFA out of Michigan State in 2024, he made his NFL debut with the Carolina Panthers later that season. He became known as the first player flagged for a hip drop tackle, though the NFL later determined the on-field official made the incorrect call.
Windmon rejoined the Steelers last October, spending three weeks on the team’s practice squad. He was released and signed back with Carolina to finish out the year. The Panthers waived Windmon in May and he joined the UFL midseason, picking up 3.5 sacks in his short stay with the Columbus Aviators.
For his NFL career, Windmon has appeared in nine games. He’s notched 22 tackles with 1.5 sacks, two QB hits and two pass breakups.
During his 2024 stint with the Steelers, Windmon played inside and outside linebacker for the team. With Pittsburgh waiving UDFA inside linebacker Daylan Carnell Monday, Windmon will likely be ticketed to begin at off-ball linebacker as the team’s No. 6 player behind Patrick Queen, Payton Wilson, Malik Harrison, Cole Holcomb and Carson Bruener.
Our 2024 camp notes on Windmon were positive, giving him a B-minus grade and writing:
“A forgotten UDFA overshadowed by the likes of CB Beanie Bishop Jr. and others, Windmon had a nice camp. He’s athletic and plays with good energy and positional flexibility. When lines got thin at outside linebacker, Windmon split time between there and inside linebacker. He played some OLB in college with over 18 career sacks during his time at UNLV and Michigan State.
He had a string of positive practices in the middle of camp and played well in the preseason opener, including a key third down breakup over the middle. His performance against Buffalo was quieter as the backup front seven struggled to stop the run.
Windmon could stick on the practice squad as a developmental player. He should be happy with the summer he put in.”
At his Pro Day, he weighed in at 6006 and 232 pounds with 32 3/8-inch arms. He ran a 4.65 40 with a 31 inch vertical and 7.31 second three cone.
Windmon will battle for a practice squad spot this summer.
