Former WFAN personality Mike Francessa has used his podcast to double-down on a claim he made several months ago, saying Jets GM Darren Mougey now sits above head coach Aaron Glenn when it comes to organizational decisions at 1 Jets Drive. For anyone paying attention to the two, this should have been obvious some time ago.
Just compare and contrast when Mougey and Aaron Glenn were introduced to the media just over a year ago to their final presser to wrap up the 2025 season.
On that first day, Glenn was the star of the show. He was bold and brash, telling Jets fans to “buckle up”. He said not to worry because Jets fans are part of a fan base that’s “built for this sh*t”. The new head coach said that success should be expected right away. Meanwhile, Mougey sat mostly quietly off to the side. When a question was finally directed at the GM, he joked about enjoying the fact that he hadn’t been asked to say much. When the season wrapped up at 1 Jets Drive for the final presser of the season, there was a dramatic shift.
Mougey opened up by doing all of the talking for the first several minutes while Glenn alternating between sitting with his arms folded or swigging out of a water bottle. When Glen did speak, it was a more subdued tone. No sniping at the press as he had done so many times throughout the season, and there were no bold predictions from the suddenly subdued coach.
Glenn did speak, but when he did, it was almost as if he was pleading with the fans to have trust in the organization. He spoke about the confidence he has in himself, Mougey and Woody Johnson. But after a miserable first season, he didn’t have anyting to hang his hat on. Nothing that he could point to as a reason for having earned the trust of the fan base that he’s the right guy to turn things around. All he could offer is that he believes in himself.
Surprisingly, Glenn would also admit to some degree, that year one as a head coach was perhaps harder than he expected, saying “As a rookie head coach (and GM), going through the first year and really understanding the landscape of everything, that’s a huge deal, I will tell you that right now”. Again, it felt as if Glenn was telling the fans he needed more time to get better because his first season threw a lot at him.
All throughout the presser, Mougey sat upright, made plenty of eye contact and felt like he was in control. It seemed the opposite of Aaron Glenn. Now all these months later, Francessa says exactly what the body language on January 6th was already telling us.
