‘Mentally, It Could Be Draining’ — Former NFL MVP Cam Newton Reveals Why He’s Worried About Longhorns Star Arch Manning

Arch Manning has already experienced the unusual pressure that comes with being one of college football’s most recognizable names. His development at Texas has included difficult moments, but also a sharp rise in public belief in his ability.

For Cam Newton, however, the biggest concern is what those expectations can do to a young quarterback mentally. This perspective became clear during Newton’s conversation with Texas legends Ricky Williams and Vince Young.

During a segment on the “4th & 1 With Cam Newton” podcast, Newton explained why Manning’s experience dealing with adversity could ultimately matter more than any individual performance. He pointed to the mental toll of trying to satisfy enormous expectations while learning how to play quarterback at the highest level.

“You know, like a guy like Arch last year, mentally, it could be draining trying to live up to the expectation,” Newton said. “Okay, he pushed and found ways to grit to say, ‘Hey, it’s not pretty, but I’m just gaining confidence.’ Too many times, especially as fans, we don’t give grace to the athletes where we see what we saw in Vince.

“We see what we see in Patrick Mahomes. We see what we see in these great athletes and say, like, ‘Yo, something had sparked them to know and want to be better.’”

Newton connected Manning’s situation to Williams’ own career, explaining that disappointment can sometimes provide the clarity an athlete needs to move forward.

“When I see your story, Ricky, and you would think that every game you just went berserk, but it’s like, man, it was one game that you, I think it was the first game of the season, that I’m reminded that, and it was like I didn’t have the game that I wanted, went somewhere, had a good night, and it just became carefree and realized, like, boom, and every game after that one, it just propelled, boom.”

Newton’s larger point was that setbacks should not automatically become judgments on a player’s ability. He believes disappointment can become part of the development process.

“But that thought of disappointment is really what I’m getting at, and not a lot of players get disappointed a lot, but disappointment may be the key recipe for success later on,” Newton said.

That idea fits Manning’s path at Texas. After facing intense scrutiny during his first season as the starter, Manning worked through inconsistency before finishing 2025 with a much stronger stretch and entering 2026 with expectations of becoming a national star.

His 2026 season debut, featuring four touchdowns and 305 yards against Texas State, only increased those expectations, leaving Manning with less room for ordinary growing pains. He is currently ranked as the eighth-best quarterback in the nation on PFN’s CFB QB Impact Metric with an impact score of 87.2.

Newton’s concern is that the weight surrounding Manning could become more difficult to manage as the spotlight grows.

So, for Manning, the challenge now is not simply meeting expectations. It is learning how to handle them without allowing one bad performance to define his confidence or development.
