Scoot Henderson was an extremely lauded draft prospect entering the league alongside Victor Wembanyama. While the latter has already cemented himself as one of the best players in the league and an MVP candidate, the former is taking a slower route to stardom.
An extremely slow start to his career with the Portland Trail Blazers saw him struggle to find his shot at the NBA level. However, in arguably the biggest game of his career, he finally came through in the best way possible.

Scoot Henderson Steps Up for the Trail Blazers Against the Spurs
A competitive first game saw the Spurs walk away with the victory. However, a Blazers team that had impressed in the Play-In tournament proved to be a tough matchup on Tuesday night.
Then, as Wembanyama went down after a hard hit on the floor, an opening emerged.
Portland was able to capitalize on the advantage immediately, becoming a more aggressive team, especially going into the paint. And that’s when Henderson came alive. Embracing a physical style, he wasn’t able to make a living in the restricted area early in his career.
That led to spending most of his career coming off the bench, with Anfernee Simons and Jrue Holiday embracing the starter role. However, against San Antonio, he may have completely changed his perception.

Notable NBA content creator and YouTuber Six Rings of Steel proclaimed, “We are witnessing Scoots best game of his career so far. This has been awesome.” However, he wasn’t the only one coming to that conclusion.
Veteran analyst Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, too, was left stunned by the performance from the former third overall pick. All he could manage on social media was an exclamation. “SCOOT HENDERSON!!! OMG”

Leading from the front, he poured in a game-high 31 points, becoming the ultimate difference maker for the Blazers.
NBA Central asked the question on everyone’s mind watching the explosion: “Is he finally putting it together?”

As Bleacher Report broke down his stat line, it was hard to argue against the idea. “BLAZERS TIE SERIES VS. SPURS WITHOUT WEMBY. Scoot Henderson tonight: 31 PTS, 11/17 FG, 5/9 3PM. He was COOKING.”
Even with his electric game, a resilient Spurs squad persevered, holding a 101-95 lead with 3:37 remaining in the contest. Understandably, Portland chose to keep the ball in his hands.
A clutch 3-pointer was the turning point in the final minutes. Down by 4, Henderson reached 30 with the triple and brought Portland within striking distance, trailing 101-100.
As SportsCenter declared, “Scoot Henderson Masterclass!”

After the game, the relief was palpable from every corner of the Portland fan base. However, beat writer Sean Highkin revealed that Henderson wasn’t as concerned about the home crowd’s energy moving forward.
As he covered his comments on X, Highkin wrote, “Scoot Henderson on Game 3: ‘Man, I already know Rip City gonna be turnt. Even if we were down 2-0 they’d be cheering us like we were up 2-0.’”
Even with his confidence, the importance of the game was hard to overstate. As Esfandiar Baraheni of The Athletic broke down, “Blazers needed that win with Wemby’s status up in the air. But a special performance from Scoot Henderson in… the biggest Blazers game in nearly half a decade? Really happy to see him have this moment. Hope it’s the start of something.”

Brett Usher, though, went a different route with his analysis of the game. Making a pointed remark, “It took some time, but at the ripe old age of 22, Scoot has arrived.”
Henderson’s third year in the league had been marred by injuries in a big way. Suiting up for just 30 games, he had a largely unremarkable season overall.
But, as his post-game press conference revealed, that hadn’t taken away from his confidence.
When the reporter asked, “Was there a moment that you felt it? Pre-game, locker room, warmup, during the game? When did you realize you had it tonight?” Unfazed, Henderson responded, “When I woke up.”

Now, as they go back to Portland for the third game in the series, Wembanyama’s status is still up in the air. The first-ever unanimous DPOY entered concussion protocol, which could keep him out for a large chunk of the series, potentially as long as Game 7, if the need arises.
That will give the Blazers a huge opportunity to pull off a massive upset, but they will need more performances like this from Henderson to have a chance, as the Spurs can be a dangerous team even without Wemby on the court.
