Steelers make contract offer to Joey Porter Jr. with sides still apart

Joey Porter Jr. and the Pittsburgh Steelers have until Sunday. The organization stops negotiating contracts once the regular season begins. 

General manager Omar Khan has reiterated that the policy stays in place, and Pittsburgh opens against the Atlanta Falcons at Acrisure Stadium on Sept. 13. Mike Garafolo took the current state of the talks to “The Insiders” on NFL Network on Tuesday.

“We have said that there hasn’t been an offer made. Update, there had been an offer made,” Garafolo said. “I am told via sources that the Steelers have made an offer. It is not good enough for this one to be deemed close, but the Steelers are showing a willingness to engage, which means we’ve got a couple days for both sides to figure out what are the right numbers to get a deal done. There is a lot of work to be done from my understanding. I would not call it imminent. I would not call it close, but I will call it an actual negotiation now.”

An offer on the table is further than this went at any point in training camp or the preseason, when the Steelers had put nothing formal in front of Porter’s agent at all.
